favorite songs 2016

( General and Mixes )

Posted on Sunday 8 January 2017

If this year’s mix of my favorites is any guide, 2016 was a good year for mainstream music. And I think that’s fair: Beyonc√©’s incredible concept album signaled a shift in how high profile artists approach their audience as they move from roles as ‘top selling’ artists towards ‘most streamed’ artists whose exclusive content could make waves amongst the competition between streaming sites. So the music industry is still looking at music as ‘content,’ but at least there is an acknowledgement that art will draw people, where previously the industry looked to catchy hooks grabbing attention through repetitive play.

I’m happy with what I heard. Here are some of my favorites:

June 2007 Mix
I’m going to give a try at doing a monthly mix/collection of tracks. I’ve been thinking about adding this to the site for a long time now, both as a way to ensure that there is a more dependable feed of music recommendations, as well to point out some good tracks without having to do a full writeup for each song. So yeah, the long and short of it is that this should allow me to continue to be lazy about posting, without having to feel like I’m not doing anything for the site.

CMG’s collection of year-end lists are awesome, especially the OK Computer top 12, top 8 use of handclaps, and the top 10 worst list ideas. I liked the covers list too, though it probably could be expanded to 25 or 50 even (Modest Mouse’s Santo & Johnny cover would make my list). Did I mention they have a podcast? I must still be on those crazy pills though, because I can’t find an RSS link for the thing.

My Morning Jacket < Radiohead

Posted on Wednesday 16 November 2005

I was listening to My Morning Jacket‘s Z today and was struck by how much “Dondante” sounded like a Radiohead song. Like, isn’t that melody in the beginning lifted from an OK Computer b-side or something? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Well reading up on it a bit, Z was produced by John Leckie, who produced The Bends. The kicker to explain the OK Computer connection is that “Dondante” was written in memory of a friend that passed, thus giving it the somber, pained sound that often characterizes late-90s Radiohead.
