My body is a jar for a special insect caught inside it
Sometimes it lights me up but I would never let you know it
Sometimes it crawls around and makes me laugh when I am down
I don’t wanna let it out yet I am greedy, little bug

January Mix

I’m really happy with this mix, a bit of an homage to the new music from Manchester that the internet is so good to allow me a window into from afar. And damn it, it should be a good mix. It’s a new year, I’ve been switching between new and vintage themed mixes, all of which are the result of a good deal of research and noodling. I hope you enjoy this one too, awkward, painful, and torn love letter that it is.

a history of modest mouse

The best thing I’ve seen all year. Interviews with Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, Jeremiah Green, Dann Gallucci, Doug Martsch, Calvin Johnson, Phil Ek, Rich Jensen, Chris Takino, Scott Swayze, Elliott Smith, and Pat Graham.

To say that the first two Modest Mouse records changed my life would be an understatement. I’ve poured over those lyrics, sang along (including an impersonation of Isaac’s lisp), confused myself with the time signature of “Dramamine,” and used both albums as a soundtrack to a cross-country driving adventure. I am still enamored with these two albums, and the thesis of Lonesome Crowded West (and similar ideas expressed on This Is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About) probably had a greater effect on my thinking than a good deal of my education. Must see (Pitchfork-dot) TV.

January Mix

I’m excited for a new year, and I’ll let my anticipated list speak for itself in terms of my optimism for the year. This month starts of with post-Ima Robot band, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, who made it onto my best of the year list as well. “40 Day Dream” has probably the most Ima Robot feel of any of the tracks from their debut, Up From Below, which is probably why it is, nostalgically, one of my favorites. Surfer Blood was another 2009 favorite that never made it onto a mix until this one. Beach House sounds amazing, and I’m glad that I only have a few more weeks here to wait for the album.

best of 2009
Most of these found their way onto the monthly mixes, with the exception of some of the more well-known songs. Here they are for you, provided again in a nice Muxtape-style Opentape format. Enjoy.

res. There will be more posted in the future so stay tuned.

And to everyone that was shouting for ‘Crying Just for Show’ at the Icebird/French Kicks show last night, though we were not successful in our plea, I was assured by drummer Aaron Thurston after the show that they would be it bringing back sometime soon.
