djs, mixers, downloaders, and those with an itching aural fixation, hearsay 02 is now in session. for our first themed mix, i give you the following provocation. there is an inevitable risk every musician takes of repeating what has already been done. every musician and artist is is shaped and inspired by many influences, though i would argue the contemporary music landscape exhibits new modes and methods of repetition. it seems that rather than aiming to make a new music, many bands have turned to the past, mining it for unexplored ideas, exploiting the nostalgia attached to a given sound, or rendering it into pieces that are reassembled in a new way. it was pablo picasso who once said, “in art, you must kill your father.” any dj will tell you that authenticity can be found in repetition, but in the end are we really just fondling our nostalgia? fondling is good, but not so often that it makes you blind.
maybe you guys think that “new” music is a crock and everything has been done before. maybe you think david byrne is an old fart and the arcade fire is where its at. either way, i hope this results in a discussion you can’t find elsewhere.
