December Mix
I don’t think I’m going to make a holiday mix this year. Sorry, Jesus.

In case anyone has noticed, I’ve always liked the idea of making the mixes more diverse in terms of period that other sites and on the radio, and usually have an unwritten rule of 1/3 new, 1/3 2000-2006, and 1/3 older stuff. While I appreciate the new music they throw at you, if there is one thing that really bothers me about KCRW/Morning Becomes Eclectic , its the way all of the music they play seems to be tied into its commercial availability. I prefer college radio that is more individual to the DJ’s taste and is simply a selection of good songs that you may or may not have ever heard. I love it when tracks from 20, 40, 60 years ago are thrown in, but on their merits rather than because they made it on to the most recent Wes Andersen soundtrack.

November Mix
A new month and a new mix. I’ve been wanting to incorporate a bunch of these for some time, especially Murder Mystery and the Radio Free Silverlake recommended, Saturday Looks Good To Me. “Lift Me Up” is totally a revamp of “You Can’t Hurry Love” and I love it for that. This Miracle Fortress song that Freed recommended has a similar 50s/60s feel that I’m really digging. Deer Tick is on here again because he is amazing and Pitchfork is so wrong, you’d think Bill Kristol wrote the review.

October 2007 Mix
This month’s mix is up, and goes out to our friend and hospitalized KXLU DJ, Octavius. If anyone finds his Suzuki-riding assailant, make a Tom Hanks-style citizen’s arrest. Its weird, because I distinctly remember when I started pulling these selections together that I was worried that it was too folksy. As it turned out it is straight pop. Well maybe not straight pop, but there is a lot of electronica stuff in there and it is more pop than usual.

September 2007 Mix
Ok, so for the record I went to a couple shows recently; Tokyo Police Club & Foreign Born. Both were great, but it doesn’t look like I’m going to get around to posting about them. Both did single-song encores, which is fun, but to me is like only having 15 pieces of flair. It’s the bare minimum, ok? Tokyo Police Club did “Friends of P” by The Rentals which was pretty awesome. Possibly even more awesome was Foreign Born finally playing my favorite song (and last month mix selection), “In The Shape.” Pitchfork can go smurf themselves, and you should go get that album. The new Okkervil River and New Pornographers are well worth your paper as well. I’d tell you about them, but then I’d have to thrill you.

August 2007 Mix
This month’s mix is up. I’m eagerly awaiting a Thieves Like Us full-length based on this demo that I posted last December. There’s also Club 8, a Swedish band on the Labrador label that I’ve been meaning to post about ever since they sent us this track. Enjoy.

how embarassing

July 2007 Mix
A whole month without a single post. Well at least there’s a new mix up. I think I need to post about this band, Monster, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Have you heard the new Ola Podrida? Well now you have. Does the New Fast Automatic Daffodils song sound familiar? Oh, and Rademacher is playing a free show tomorrow at the Silverlake Lounge. Enjoy.

June 2007 Mix
I’m going to give a try at doing a monthly mix/collection of tracks. I’ve been thinking about adding this to the site for a long time now, both as a way to ensure that there is a more dependable feed of music recommendations, as well to point out some good tracks without having to do a full writeup for each song. So yeah, the long and short of it is that this should allow me to continue to be lazy about posting, without having to feel like I’m not doing anything for the site.

hearsay 08: the mixes are in

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that exchanged mixes this time around, it was a really good group and I think our best exchange yet. This is the least themed of any of the exchanges so far, or rather, most people personalized the themes to their music. Topo has been pushing […]

hang the djs

I remember being pretty shocked when I read that the RIAA was now going after their own promoters on Nah Right, but The New York Times gave the whole episode a full write-up in a lengthy article on Sunday. Now, I’ve only occasionally listened to hip-hop mix CDs (mostly when I was living in Brooklyn near the Fulton Ave mall and they were just there to try out). I’m not in to the acts that Drama pushes, but I thought it was funny in the way that the article described what they do:

The CDs made in The Aphilliates’ studio are called mixtapes — album-length compilations of 20 or so songs, often connected by a theme; they are produced and mixed by a D.J. and usually “hosted” by a rapper

ITunes Killed the Concept Album?

I finally got around to reading the Sunday Times today (and posting in more months than I’d like to count) and came across an interesting article by Elisabeth Vincentelli, If You Won’t Play the Album, They’ll Sing It, From the Top, not quite lamenting the diminished status of the long play album. Vincentelli suggests […]
