Back when I started doing these mixes every month, I saw it as a manageable way to keep recommending music without the effort that it takes to do a researched, singular writeup. It seemed to me that picking out 10 random songs wouldn’t be all that hard – I always have new things that I’m listening to, as well as my entire musical upbringing to highlight. A part of the experienced mixtaper in me was never satisfied with these as “mixes.” For one, there is only so much you can do in 10 songs… they really seemed more like mini samplers than what I knew a mix to be: there was no intro, no interludes, no story, nothing that expressed the voice of the DJ other than simple taste.
So that, coupled with the fact that I have a big backlog of songs that I’ve wanted to include on this site is the reason that I’m changing things up this month. I hope you enjoy this 77-minute, CD-length version of the monthly mix, which is really much more in line with the type of mixes I make for friends. I can’t promise that I’ll have the stamina to do a full mix like this every month, but I’m going to give it a shot for at least a couple. We’ll see how it goes, cross your fingers.
