This month’s mix is up, and goes out to our friend and hospitalized KXLU DJ, Octavius. If anyone finds his Suzuki-riding assailant, make a Tom Hanks-style citizen’s arrest. Its weird, because I distinctly remember when I started pulling these selections together that I was worried that it was too folksy. As it turned out it is straight pop. Well maybe not straight pop, but there is a lot of electronica stuff in there and it is more pop than usual.
I’m clearly affected by who is touring, because I just saw Girl Talk & Dan Deacon last week, and was introduced to Johnny & The Moon, another Wolf Parade side project, when they opened for the Handsome Furs. The Magic Bullets album is really good… Freed is crazy for it. My current obsessions are the Sexton Blake album of covers (they are insanely good… just peep what he did with this LL Cool J reworking) and Les Savy‘s new one. It is uncomfortably good. And good in a way that leaves the longtime fans really happy with the way they continue to develop. I’d almost say it is a throwback at their older stuff in that it is so hard and clearly punk, but it picks up and expands on the sound that they’ve grown into since that time. “Slugs in the Shrubs” is a kick in the pants. A surprise favorite that started as my least favorite. The lyrics are awesome, and delivered as a basically yelled rap. The icing on the cake is the building scream that plays in the beginning and continues through the song; it reminds me of the exclamation that Kanye used as a trademark on his earlier productions (“The Truth,” “Hey Mama”). Anyway… find something new, enjoy.
