Ever since I heard their fantastic, seemingly out-of-nowhere set on WOXY, I’ve been looking for Prompts/Miscues. Yes, I could have bought it online, but I sort of was wondering just how obscure these guys were. Foundry Field Recordings is a pretty long-winded name, so I feel pretty dorky whenever I inevitably have to ask someone if they have their album. Sea Level Todd looked bewildered when I asked him… and he’s usually on top of most everything. I was almost embarrassed. But I found one copy hiding away at Amoeba a while back and was so excited that I let it sit for over a month before writing about it.
Well, it’s soaked in. And I can without a doubt say that this is one of my favorite albums I’ve picked up this year. Without a doubt because there’s only a couple weeks left and most other sites are already posting their best of the year lists. Where are these guys from again? It looks like Missouri. I’ll have to stop giving substance(s) a hard time about her homeland. The album has an incredible depth and range. I think that they are unique enough that comparisons are tough, but I’d again say there is some Sparklehorse in there, and maybe an element of 2004’s most criminally overlooked band, Blue States.
I love the upbeat feel to the album. Ironic, considering the way it feels like a period piece of World War I stories. They have a sweet stop-motion video for Holding the Pilots/Holding the Facts on Youtube. And yes, that chorus does sound like it was lifted from Elton’s “Rocket Man,” but so what? I still love it.
Everyone get down.

I am getting down with TFFR (love those acronyms). And cheers about Blue States, too bad the recent release doesn’t match The Soundings.
There’s a new Blue States album? I thought they were still working on it…
