I’m so glad that Broken Social Scene introduced me to Gentleman Reg. But even so, I have time and again failed to give him enough attention. The truth is, his 2004 album, Darby and Joan, is really solid and deserved a lot more listens than I initially agreed to give it.
For those that haven’t seen Reg Vermue play with BSS, he sorta sings like a girl, but in a very Morrissey way. And while it might not be terribly masculine, it is incredibly infectious. Like head lice… but if there was a good type of head lice that got stuck in your head and only came out by shampooing vigorously. Actually, i guess, exactly like head lice. “The Boyfriend Song” is the catchiest with upbeat 4/4 drumming and a relatively simple melody, but getting stuck up on that was what kept me from recognizing gems like “Over My Head” and “All My Love,” which could almost be a Low song. Give him a chance to fall.
