You best belive my introduction to The Shangri-Las was The Go-Go’s, but I had always wished it had been a bit later in my years living in the Nation of Ulysses. Instead, I always associated the two through the later release of the Go-Go’s cover of “Walking in the Sand.” Later on, when a friend made me a mixtape with N.O.U. on it, they were forever cemented as a retro/punk act to me when I heard the intro to “Today I Met The Girl I’m Going To Marry.” Only afterwards, did I pick up that the revolutionary take on 60s pop ran deeper, what with their matching suits at the live shows, and the reappropriation of the “He hit me / It felt like a kiss” line in “The Sound of Jazz To Come.”
There’s only one Nation of Ulysses.
