Human Television
Human Television (myspace) is a hard band to pinpoint. Recommended to me as a “shoegaze” band in the realm of The Meeting Places, they have elements in common, but for the most part are anything but. Much too poppy to be relegated to that sub-genre, their album covers a lot of ground, from The Jesus & Mary Chain (”I’m Moving On”) to R.E.M. (”On and On”) to The Notwist (”Untitled”). Pitchfork labeled them “derivative” and has a more encompasing list of twee & shoegaze comparisons, so I’ll leave the pigeonholing to them. In some ways the album reminds me of Ambulance Ltd; it is so varied that the band clearly does not want to be held to any particular sound. The main reason for this has to be the opening track, “I’m Moving On,” which, it is explained, is the first song the band wrote. But despite the range, the album remains catchy and digestible, and finds its own form of cohesion through the mix.
