You best belive my introduction to The Shangri-Las was The Go-Go’s, but I had always wished it had been a bit later in my years living in the Nation of Ulysses. Instead, I always associated the two through the Go-Go’s cover of “Walking in the Sand.” Later on, when a friend made me a mixtape with N.O.U. on it, they were forever cemented as a retro/punk act to me when I heard the intro to “Today I Met The Girl I’m Going To Marry.”
I’m almost embarassed to have basically rented a space on the floor at The Truobadour this past weekend. But really, there was a long lull without many decent shows, so it was a nice change of pace to have so many to go to. The Troubadour is without a doubt my favorite venue in L.A. (though Hotel Cafe was a pretty nice intimate spot), so of all places, I’m glad that they have stepped up their schedule.

Around the time some substance(s), freed & myself became obsessed with Erotic Photo Hunt, I did a google search about it which led to a post by Jin, the manager of Dirty on Purpose, documenting my longtime favorite live band’s prowess at the game. Now, they may have the high score as some podunk bar in Williamsburg, but we happen to be pretty good ourselves, and we immediately went on an Erotic Les Savy Fav Hunt.
When I think of cake and music, I immediately conjure up an image from that disgusting pro-cannibalism Tom Petty video. His grill scares me in general, but the thought of him carving me up or, even worse, smearing parts of me in his newlywed bride’s face to the bemusement of some freeloader relatives that he would otherwise never see is pretty much too much for me to take.
A bit of free assosciation… I stopped back in New York a couple weeks ago and picked up a couple old cd’s from my parents place that were hidden away. I’ve always liked Lois, but mostly in moderation. It’s mostly due to the limited range of her songs, because the repetitive nature of the songs is pretty well countered by her incredible voice. I know Interpol tried an unsuccesful attempt at patenting repetitive guitar chords, but I thought that all 3 of these tracks had a similar sound, which is especially odd considering how different they are in general. The Meeting Places track is my favorite from their first album, though I have to admit that the new one is way better. But I love the title as a lyric, for being odd and long-winded. But its pretty much the only way to explain that emotion.
One last one for the Yacht Rockers.
Human Television (myspace) is a hard band to pinpoint. Recommended to me as a “shoegaze” band in the realm of The Meeting Places, they have elements in common, but for the most part are anything but. Much too poppy to be relegated to that sub-genre, their album covers a lot of ground, from The Jesus & Mary Chain (”I’m Moving On”) to R.E.M. (”On and On”) to The Notwist (”Untitled”).
There is a pretty steady stream of quality bands that filter through WOXY’s “Lounge Acts” studio. I usually will check out the podcast at work, and then go to So Much Silence for individual tracks of the bands I like best. For some reason, they didn’t get around to the French Kicks session from a couple weeks ago, so I had to split up the tracks for myself. It was a good set of songs from their new album, even though they skipped my favorites. I do love the shift halfway through “Go On.” Sweet.
