Alec Ounsworth (Flashy Python) : Joe’s Pub

( Live )

Just at the very beginning of the buzz of Brooklyn’s Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, lead singer Alec Ounsworth played a free ’solo’ show at the tiny Pete’s Candy Store, in Williamsburg. I was completely hooked on the (then new) CYHSY! record, and jumped at the chance to get any live variant that I possibly could. I was surprised but completely impressed with Alec’s side project, which featured a much more twangy, folk-rock side of the singer-songwriter. As I mentioned in my review of Band of Horses on Sunday, I’m not usually drawn to this end of the rock spectrum. If anything, that night made me more greatly appreciate Alec Ounsworth’s talent, as he eschewed the dance-rock guitar driven sound of CYHSY!, for that of acoustic guitar, harmonica, lap steel and brushed drums.

Band of Horses : Warsaw

( Live )

I’ve been enjoying Band of Horses new record, Everything all the Time, quite a bit. The twangy side of rock usually doesn’t draw me in too much but these guys know how to put some good songs together. It probably doesn’t hurt that 2/5 of them were in one of my favorite underrated bands, Carissa’s Wierd. Topo and Freed were hyping up their live show after seeing them out in LA, so I decided to check them out. Last night was the third night of sold out NY shows, which saw the band playing Bowery Ballroom on Friday, crossing the Hudson to play Maxwell’s in Hoboken on Saturday, before landing in Brooklyn for the finale.

when we dance, the night belongs to us

The Constantines have a bunch of great lines on each album, and I think that’s my favorite (from “Poison” on Shine A Light). It makes me want to dance each time I hear it, even if it has to be solo. I’m gonna lump a couple more tracks that have dancing on the mind in. I especially like the “I could dance all night” refrain on “In This Home On Ice.” Seriously, has anyone who got sucked in to the Clap Your Hands craze grown sick of that album yet? I certainly haven’t. By the way, the Constatines are playing Spaceland tonight and I will probably try to catch them again if its not overcrowded.

three/folk

After the last round of mixes, Mick & I exchanged extracurricular mixes to comparing our folk/country tastes. We matched up really well, and my “Folk You, Too” coupled with Mick’s more country-oriented, “Folk You, And The Horse You Rode In On” form a great addition to my morning commute shuffle. Here’s a few songs that I stuck on my version. Sera Cahoone is opening at the end of the month for Band of Horses and Mt. Egypt at the Echo. Wouldn’t miss it, even if Zooey Deschanel wanted to do an Elf-style shower duet. Actually, maybe that’s a toss up.
