Cold War Kids
I don’t know if I’m ever going to get to see Cold War Kids play live, because every time they were playing in the area, I’m either out of town or out of the country. And I’ll be gone mid-June when they come back. Shucks. This is a big problem. I had been hoping to catch them at a show in Long Beach last weekend, but that got canceled because this time they were out of the country instead. Oh, cruel irony!

Well, I guess as long as I’ve brought them up, I’ll mention that their EP, Up In Rags, is hot like a habanero chile. Like, on top of tasty Ensenada-style fish tacos. Yeah, that good. They have released 3 EP’s over the last year, each exposing a bit more of their sound and range. The Mulberry Street EP is perhaps my favorite, but Up In Rags has the best songs so far. I know the White Stripes comparison is perhaps more appropriate, but they give off a bit of an early Walkmen feel to me. Hell, I wish the newer Walkmen stuff had ended up sounding more like this instead of the jumbled mess that it is. Double shucks.

: Cold War Kids – The Wedding : (especially Walkmen-esque)

[...] Whoops. Despite all the blogging on the Cold War Kids, including this site, I’ve only managed to give them a cursury listen. I guess something sunk in and I decided to check out their live show Friday night at the Mercury Lounge. Um…They were fucking awesome. Every song. They played with amazing energy, and I can’t believe these guys were playing before Sound Team, whose set paled in comparison. If you’ve been as stupid and me and ignored these guys as long as I have, I implore you to buy their ep’s and catch them at a small venue while you still have a chance! [...]

[...] As I’ve mentioned, its taken quite a while for me to finally get a chance to see Cold War Kids. Freed and I caught them Friday night at the Troubadour, and they pretty much rocked our socks off (see, not everyone in L.A. wears flip-flops everywhere). But let me back up and mention that they recently announced the tracklist to their debut, which comes out October 16th. I’ll admit I was a little disappointed that all of the songs have already been released on EP’s and in the recent Daytrotter Session, but they are most of the better songs, and it will be interested to see how they re-record and/or master them for the record.
