Blood On The Tracks
Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks
Written shorty after the dissolution of Dylan’s first marriage, Blood On The Tracks is a rollercoaster of emotions, honest and exposed. Its hard to say, but it is among my favorite Dylan albums (probably a close second after Freewheelin’), because of the way that it manages to be simultaneously focused and all over the place. The album teeters between regret (”You’re A Big Girl Now”), pain (”If You See Her, Say Hello”), frustration (”Idiot Wind”), and making due (”Simple Twist of Fate”). Something in the candid, yet coded lyrics gives the album a sense of Dylan’s intent to vent his feelings while keeping some element of himself private and protected. “People tell me it’s a sin / To know and feel too much within / I still believe she was my twin / But I lost the ring / She was born in spring / But I was born too late / Blame it on a simple twist of fate.”

I know this track is way more well known than the other’s that you mentioned, but this verse is one of my favorites on the album, and surely applicable to the theme. Its been covered by everyone from the Dead to the Cowboy Junkies to the Indigo Girls, but for good reason.

So now I’m goin’ back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They’re an illusion to me now.
    Some are mathematicians
    Some are carpenter’s wives.
Don’t know how it all got started,
I don’t know what they’re doin’ with their lives.
But me, I’m still on the road
    Headin’ for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
    Tangled up in blue.
