I’m totally digging the new Danger Mouse & Cee-Lo collaboration, Gnarls Barkley, that was released last week. While “Crazy” is the hands down favorite, I also like the Berlin-sampling title track, “St. Elsewhere.” That’s Berlin, as in the group who did the song from Top Gun, Berlin. I like the way the sample gets reworked as a melody to an odd soul track. I suppose “Smiley Faces” is another standout. The Whole album pretty great, although I wish the songs had a little more length and variation… they all seem to cut off a bit prematurely.
The Fiery Furnaces have a new one out, too. And while I’m really not too into most of their stuff (I could probably be categorized as a hater), they always have a track or two that I like and forces me to reconsider my position. “Waiting To Know You” is such a track. It has a sort of 80s synth-pop feel, that simultaneously makes me think of Elvis doing “Can’t Help Falling In Love” and that same Berlin Top Gun theme song (well, sub-theme song, they’re not on a highway to the danger zone…). The melody in both songs ends up being pretty close. What a strange combination.
