New Order
After Mick put this Iron & Wine cover of “Love Vigilantes” on his last mix, I had to pull out the New Order original that I hadn’t listened to in a while. There’s also a Voxtrot version that is a playful live homage from a show last year in Brooklyn. Its relatively true to the original, while the Iron & Wine version is a really different, delicately approached cover. Considering the lyrics, it actually sounds more natural to me than the New Order version. “I want to see my family / My wife and child waiting for me / I’ve got to go home I’ve been so alone, you’ll see” sounds like a folk/country song to me much more than new wave. Do new wavers even have kids? I thought they were like the Shakers.

your iron&wine link isn’t working. i love new order, but this is one of my least favorite songs by them. i’m thinking i’ll probably agree with you and like the sam beam version better.

really? the link works for me here. i’m not the biggest new order fan… but i really like the earlier “ceremony” (yes, i know its a joy division song) & “age of consent” type stuff. i’d put this in that category.

i don’t know. the other links worked. but i got it now.

yeah, their earliest stuff (ceremony and the 1981ep) still sounds so fresh and groundbreaking. i would much rather have them continue to experiment than try to make hit singles like True Faith, etc.
