After Mick put this Iron & Wine cover of “Love Vigilantes” on his last mix, I had to pull out the New Order original that I hadn’t listened to in a while. There’s also a Voxtrot version that is a playful live homage from a show last year in Brooklyn. Its relatively true to the original, while the Iron & Wine version is a really different, delicately approached cover. Considering the lyrics, it actually sounds more natural to me than the New Order version. “I want to see my family / My wife and child waiting for me / I’ve got to go home I’ve been so alone, you’ll see” sounds like a folk/country song to me much more than new wave. Do new wavers even have kids? I thought they were like the Shakers.
