While it seems like bands/acts from Sweden have stolen the attention of the hype machine previously held by Montreal during the Arcade Fire/Wolf Parade craze, I’ve found myself listening to a bunch of the better publicized acts out of the music Mecca that is Austin.
Like many, I was looking forward to I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness‘ proper album that was released a couple months ago. While I can’t say that I’ve totally warmed to their new sound, this track “We Choose Faces,” along with it’s intro, “Today,” has to be my favorite track of the year so far. The song is so early New Order… it makes me question how genuine the “I’ve always liked bad weather” lyrics are coming out of beautiful Austin, TX. Maybe they’re planning on moving to Manchester. They’re finally coming here next week and I’m really curious to see what they’re like.
Zykos is a band that came to my attention after being championed by other weblogs, and while the tracks on their website have a bit of a Bush feel, the demo for “Keep It Light” sounds more like a hipper Soul Asylum to me. You know what, those are both horrible comparisons. Sorry about that. Whatever, the song is awesome.
And then there is Voxtrot, whose sound is so warm and poppy that I can’t help but enjoy all of their stuff. They were great live, and since they pick fun songs to cover, it is really cool that they’ve posted a collection of covers on their website.

Good to see you’re back. Concur completely about We Chose Faces - a great song. Voxtrot too. Thoughts on The Black Angels?
you know, you had mentioned them before, hadn’t you? i didn’t check them until now… they’re good. sort of jesus & mary chain/black rebel motorcylcle club with the added intensity of secret machines’ super-drums… pretty good.
