Since I mentioned Chisel the other day, I thought I might dedicate a post to them . It was weird at the Voxtrot show to think that it’s 10 years later and I’m still listening to essentially the same sort of music.
I figure most people are familiar with lead singer, Ted Leo (well, maybe not everybody), but it seems like most are much less familiar with Chisel. For a couple years in 1996-1997 they were a realitively heavily hyped band out of the D.C. scene, and I was a huge fan. I think of them as having a pop-punk/garage rock sound with some Beatles harmonies thrown in. I was really disappointed to hear of their demise, just after the release of their 2nd album, Set You Free. Leo never quite grabbed me in his post-Chisel bands, first The Sin-Eaters and later as Pharmacists, and I attribute a big part of this to the chemistry that Chisel had as a three-piece, particularly to Chris Norborg’s bass and harmonies. I’ve grown to like much of his solo/Pharmacists work, particularly The Tyranny of Distance. But the Chisel stuff still sticks with me. It’s hard to pick out favorites, because the songs I liked the most live I liked the least on record and vice-versa. Check them all out, because they’re all good.
