Mellowdrone : Spaceland

Posted on Friday 27 January 2006

When 10.30 rolled around tonight I realized that I could either sit on the couch and catch The Daily Show and a rerun of Seinfeld or I could visit one of my local fav’s Spaceland for a nightcap and some Mellowdrone. Now I will readily admit that the main reason, maybe the only reason, I was willing to leave my warm chair to venture out and attempt to find parking in Silverlake at 11pm is the track “Fashionable Univited”. For this track I felt the band was aptly named and I wanted to hear more. With a voice matching the sorid murmurings of The National’s Matt Berninger and a sound not so far from the eclectic edginess of Sparklhorse, Jonathan Bates and his 4 piece took the stage in front of a large hometown crowd. While moments in the show got me to put down my drink to give a hoot and a clap, nothing eclipsed or really even approached the, well mellow droneyness, of Fashionable Univited, which to their credit they played second to last. Bates summed up their sound well in a recent interview at Filter Magazine, “The songs are intentionally simple with lots of familiar chord progressions, a big Phil Spector wall of sound and lots of compression and reverb. I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel, I just want to ride it for a little while. My objective was to dress these familiar sounds up differently.”
