don’t go drown in a shallow pool…

I’m appropriating that line from Tsunami’s “Old Grey Mare” as my new years resolution. This was a favorite of mine back from their final album, A Brilliant Mistake (1997). I never knew exactly what the song was about, but I assumed that it was a heartbroken response to the departure of Scrawl from their own record label to Elektra in 1996. Scrawl had been an inspiration to Tsunami, but after releasing Velvet Hammer on Simple Machines, they moved on to the majors. I think that the decision was aided by their relationship with Afghan Whig, Greg Dulli, but nevertheless Elektra never really suited them and they only lasted with the label through 2 albums. Jenny Toomey’s voice builds beautifully through the song, and her (presumed) derision, “When it all came down to the money, well I knew we had lost our philosopher-king,” still sticks with me.
