Mellowdrone : Spaceland

( Live )

Posted on Friday 27 January 2006

When 10.30 rolled around tonight I realized that I could either sit on the couch and catch The Daily Show and a rerun of Seinfeld or I could visit one of my local fav’s Spaceland for a nightcap and some Mellowdrone. Now I will readily admit that the main reason, maybe the only reason, I was willing to leave my warm chair to venture out and attempt to find parking in Silverlake at 11pm is the track “Fashionable Univited”. For this track I felt the band was aptly named and I wanted to hear more.

Resolved in 2006: Cultivate the yindie backlash I know that everyone is tired of those end of the year top tens, but after seeing the LAWeekly’s “Zeitlist” annual copendium of politics, culture, and ephemera I am compelled to comment. Diverse end of year lists like 5 Blogs for Musical Archaeologists, 10 Albums That Stank Up [...]

five four

Five Four
On a whim I checked out Washington, D.C.’s Five Four. I’m gonna call it early Sea and Cake sung by a non-screaming Kathleen Hannah. Or maybe Helium meets Bloc Party. No, Kathleen Hannah was a better comparison, but they’re not that aggressive, and more upbeat in a danceable sort of way. Either way, I like their stuff… They have a demo/EP up, and each of the 4 songs are pretty much equally good, so go check them out. And somebody, please take a better picture of them.

Do people even watch music videos anymore? I mean, other that the occasional internet download, I don’t even know where one goes to see videos these days. Well I was going to put up a post to celebrate the arrival of the webcam lip-sync video (call it “fan-syncing” or something), but it looks like somebody beat me to the punch.

Wilderness
Seems i wasn’t giving the boys from Wilderness enough credit in my ‘most anticipated 2006′ list. Their website announces a new LP on Jagjaguwar and full north american tour this spring. Until then, they are playing the Cake Shop here in NYC 2/17, 18. I’ll be sure to check them out.

kcrw
i missed the king of france tonight at spaceland thanks to the overprotective bouncing that goes along with “kcrw presents” events. the stupidest part of it all is that they were keeping a line of people outside to avoid overcrowding, but it really wasn’t crowded inside. well actually, the stupidest part is that had i known they were on, i would have made a stronger effort at getting in to see them rather than standing in line like an idiot.

The Lovemakers
Press photos are a requirement for marketing purposes, but some are greater than others. After noticing a few that I thought went beyond the bare minimum, I compiled a list of my favorites. I’m obviously focusing on recent stuff, but here we go:

the changes

The Changes
I was drawn to Chicago’s The Changes from a demo for “Can’t Decide” that was posted over at I Rock I Roll. For me the upbeat head-wobbling sound brings to mind Voxtrot, with a bit of vintage Walkmen in the guitars. The variety in other tracks seem to suggest that the band is still defining themselves, but “If I Tried” could be The Sea and Cake, and “Her, You and I” sounds like guitar-infused Jamiroquai. They definitely show some promise (I like the retro-rock tracks more than the poppier ones), and with some quality production I think they could be great.

like mercury… cedars

Cedars
I noticed Cedars recently after listening to their live set from the WOXY podcast. They are a pretty new band from D.C. They were previously known as Cartel, but thankfully changed their name so as not to be confused with a horrible emo/pop-punk act from Atlanta. During the live set, they admit to some Doves/Elbow/U2 influences, although I think they sound like Perfect From Now On-era Built To Spill with, yes, The Doves. At times the guitars sound like Interpol, as well.

Beck
Apparently Beck is prolific enough that the exclusive tracks on his website are on rotation. The current set of Pink Moon covers are wonderful, in particular his version of “Parasite.” Now, Mark Kozelek might not approve of Beck’s subtle reworking, but I think his voice fits the song perfectly, and I like the way that he transforms the song from Drake’s wispery/creepy version to a stronger, remorseless track. Call the set of 3 (posted here) Sea Change Appendix.
