Earlimart : Spaceland

Posted on Saturday 8 October 2005

I ditched out on drinks in honor of Zoviet’s visit last night to check out L.A. locals, Earlimart. I guess it was the last night of their tour, and a sort of return home for them, so they played a good set with some new songs. I like their Elliott Smith-inspired album, Treble & Tremble, but I pretty much thought that every song they played was “Heaven Adores You” until they finally played that and I couldn’t mistake other songs for it anymore. I must not pay enough attention to song titles anymore. Lead signer Aaron Espinoza sounded even more Elliott Smith-ey than I had expected, and less like Grandaddy or Sparklehorse, who they are often also compared to. I guess that it must also be a thing for the groups in The Ship, that the vocals are all breathy and sort of wisper-sung. The show felt more sceney than any other show I’ve been to in L.A. so far, which I guess is because they are from the neighborhood (Eagle Rock?) and most everybody knew each other. Oh, and I noticed that couple of the Silversun Pickups were there… as was the Sea Level Records dude.

[…] Freed and I checked out Band of Horses at King King last night, another Hollywood venue that was new to me. They were opening for Eagle Rock’s Earlimart, who I saw not all that long ago, around the same time I first saw Band of Horses. Earlimart was good, and sounded much like they did back in October, but with a whole new assortment of tracks, presumably recent results from ongoing recording sessions. Oh and Josh Ritter played as well, and while I mostly wasn’t feeling his stuff, there was what must have been a 10 minute epic, “Thin Blue Flame” midway through the set that was amazing. All I remember was this string of lines mid-song as it built momentum: “Singing about vengeance like it’s the joy of the lord / Bringing justice to the enemies instead of the other way around / They’re guilty where killed and they killed where they’re found.” Very Springsteen, totally moving. It was a great intro, but I (as well as a good segment of the crowd) was really there to see Horses in the context of their record, released the day before. […]
