Wolf Parade Interview

Posted on Tuesday 4 October 2005

Cokemachineglow recently published a 2-part interview with indie hypethrobs, Wolf Parade. What makes the interview really great, is the immediate chemistry and back-and-forth wit between interviewer, Aaron Newell and Wolf Parader, Spencer Krug. Pretentions about manners are thrown out in favor of some good old sarcasm. The candid nature of the interview makes not only an entertaining read, but also throws down Spencer’s guard, allowing him to give an honest and revealing look at what went through the band’s mind while they were writing & recording their new album, “Apologies to the Queen Mary.”

Here’s a part where they talk about the use of the two vocalists in the band: Spencer, the higher pitched voice, and Dan Boeckner the throatier voice.

Aaron Newell (CMG): And it’s the perfect compliment. I mean, that’s in all the textbooks: the best model for the alternative rock band is “band with one yodelly dude, one barky dude.”
Spencer Krug (SK): Really? Which one was Paul McCartney?
CMG: Well, that’s why the Beatles didn’t work out.
SK: What?
CMG: That’s why they flopped so bad. No barky dude, no yodelly dude. Roy Orbison could have done something with them, but that’s in the past.
SK: I’m surprised you’ve even heard of them.
CMG: Well, yeah. I mean, I’m an indie rock journalist. So it’s my job to dig up the obscurities.

They get into specifics about the band’s perception of their success, as well as talking about the meaning behind individual songs. Here’s an interesting look at some of the lyrics:

CMG: Well I was just going to ignore anything you said about that song anyway. What do the “la la la la la la la la’s” mean in “Sons and Daughters”?
SK: It means “blah blah blah”.
CMG: That rhymes with it.
SK: It means “not saying anything”. It’s this idea that you just tralala along, that you just go along with things. It symbolizes “not caring”, just sort of let the intellectual struggle go and just “blah blah”, like how in this interview right now I want to dump my coffee over my head and start speaking all the Spanish words that I know.
CMG: Thanks.
