I heard a while back that Erika from Dirty On Purpose had left the band and then I noticed her new band, Au Revoir Simone. I was a little confused because they hadn’t announced her departure on their website, but had removed images of her from all the band photos. Well Joe & Doug appeared on Sandy Acres Sound Lab and confirmed that Erika had left the band, but that they currently have a friend, Meghan, temporarily filling her shoes at live shows. They also played a couple acoustic songs, including a new song, “No Radio,” which you can grab through though the podcast of the 9/17 show.

yeah i’ve been digging them for a while, and i’m hoping they can keep together & turn out a great album next year despite being down one dirty. i definitely appreciate what you are doing over at east village radio… especially that you have such a diverse & eclectic mix of good stuff, not just the flavor of the month. keep up the good work!
i found this kind of interesting blog comment about the first sans Erika show they played. Scroll down and there is actually a reply from one of the band members trying to clarify some of the confusion…and wink at some of the snarky comments.

ha. i never saw that… funny that they tiltled it so similarly. i was just referring to the soundy acres lab ’sausagefest’ joke, but perhaps on the show they were referring to that blog.
some friends of mine went to that show and had that same reaction… they were surprised that erika wasn’t there, and then let down overall. but i was looking for some confirmation since there wasn’t anything on their website. well, i’m happy with the new tracks for now.
and yeah, what’s with all the snotty scenesters? i would have to expect that somebody got their girlfriend stolen or something because the whole “this is criticism, deal with it” to justify saying “you suck.” is a pretty pathetic argument. well, along those lines, that blog sucked, glad they gave up on it.
[…] I have been meaning to check out Dirty on Purpose ever since I got their Sleep Late for a Better Tomorrow EP. As previously mentioned on this blog, Vocalist/Keyboardist and resident hot-chick, Erika Forster left the band to focus on Au revoir Simone. Having listened to the new live tracks the band has posted, I came to the same conclusion that topomodesto did…that falsetto is a little bit rough. If you listen to the ep, there is only one song that doesn’t either feature Erika, or have her complementing drummer Doug Marvin. Seeing them live, you realize that Marvin barely does any drumming while he’s singing. Picking up the slack for Erika is guitarist Joseph Jurewicz, who’s off key falsetto, when audible, is pretty grating. I think what you have is a band that makes great music, but they are really without a singer, and seemingly lost with where to go with it. It seems pretty clear to me that if they simply soldier on without Erika, they are not going to get very far. Having Marvin and Jurewicz focus solely on vocals in a studio setting may get them their next record, but i’m not sure they are ever going to be able to cut it on the road. They really do make great music, and the new live stuff (if you ignore the vocal performaces) sounds solid. It will be interesting to see where they go from here. […]
