V/A - Stubbs The Zombie Soundtrack

Posted on Tuesday 27 September 2005

Aspyr Media recently commisioned a number of indie rockers to record covers of 50’s tunes for the upcoming xbox game, Stubbs The Zombie. It’s an interesting theme, and the inclusion of bands like The Walkmen, The Dandy Warhols, Death Cab For Cutie, and The Flaming Lips is sure to garner some attention. Unfortunately, much as the game appears to capatalize on the recent zombie film craze, the soundtrack seems a cheap mockery of indie rock’s emerging popularity. There are a number of uninspired covers which have been “indierockicized,” much as Cherrydisc did in the mid-90’s with “Punk Rock Jukebox”, whose formulaic revamps of 80’s hits showed just how thoughtless punk rock had become.

There are a few standout tracks, especially Rogue Wave’s interesting rendition of Buddy Holly’s “Everyday,” that has been posted temporarily over at gorilla vs. bear.
